Why Slowlyy?
The cost of fast fashion.
Its time to go behind the layers of advertising and media and see what your money is truly contributing to.
In a world of instant gratification, I encourage you to pause, reflect, and consider the true impact of your choices. Join me at Slowlyy Studio to be a part of the change.
This is Slowlyy Studio, where fashion isn't just about what you wear but a mindful journey that starts with the name. At Slowlyy, I focus on more than just garments creating a more immersive experience. I offer custom pieces and personalized styling services, blending them seamlessly so you can indulge in the luxury of full customization. To me learning how to wear your clothes is just as important as the actual clothes themselves.
Why the focus on slow fashion?
Existential dread.
I'm only half kidding…
Our planet bears the brunt of our consumerist culture, which in turn we do too, with the fashion industry ranking as the second most polluting. Fast fashion is a business model that focuses on the consumption rather than the art and purpose of clothes. Theres an emphasis on quickly producing and selling inexpensive clothing items that mimic current fashion trends.
During production and consumption including textile production, fabric dyeing and short garment lifespans the fashion industry contributes to 8% of all carbon emissions; which turns out to be more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Along with 20% of global wastewater and an anticipated 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. 6 years from now.
We are closer to 2030 than the peak of most of our lives
and yes i’m talking about 2016.
How could some clothes contribute to this much …?
I know we both don’t want to be here all day so i’ll give you the impact of what it takes to produce one t-shirt to put everything in perspective.
It takes about 2700 litres to make one single cotton tee.
This includes not only the water used to grow the cotton but also the water used in processing and finishing the fabric. This combined water usage makes cotton one of the most water-intensive crops globally. Which in most cases are overproduced and end up in a landfill or only worn for a short period of time and again end up in that same landfill. Not including the lack of transparency of these fast fashion companies on who exactly is making the pieces and what conditions they may be in.
All that is one t-shirt.
One that you may be wearing right now.
Slow fashion disrupts this cycle.
To me slow fashion isn't only just shopping at what is advertised as sustainable and ethical. It represents a full mindset shift, from one that has become ingrained within us all through media and consumer culture. It's about reconnecting with our environment and acknowledging the interconnectedness of our actions with the planet, knowing the effects it has on you and generations to come, and how this shift can benefit you today.
By embracing slow fashion, you're not merely supporting a brand; you're backing local communities, ethical practices, and a healthier planet for us all.
Now how is Slowlyy contributing to the change? Every order is handmade, made to order or released in limited quantity drops, reducing waste and carbon footprint during production. Sourcing fabric mainly from local fabric shops, up-cycling preloved pieces, and never seeing fabric scraps as garbage but a part of something new, providing you with pieces that speak to your personal style and values that you can buy with intention and guilt free. It's a deliberate choice to invest in pieces that last.
This comes with not only purchasing great sustainable pieces but learning what clothes to even buy to begin with. This is why i’ve added personal styling into the brand and a key part of how we can have an impact on the fashion industry together. When choosing my personal styling services I act as a guide and teacher to help you learn what it is about you and your body that makes you feel good and most authentically you. Tools that you’ll carry in your everyday life to make more intentional fashion choices and purchases not only through my store but anywhere. I don’t believe its practical for em to say only shop from a store like mine in this world today, but having a different mindset when buying from even fast fashion companies can make all the difference we need.
So, how can you embrace slow fashion in your everyday life right now?
Do a closet clean-out; see what you may have hiding in the back of your closet and pay attention to the types of clothes you actually are wearing vs. letting sit there.
Embrace the creativity of styling or upcycling what you already have.
Thrift shop or buy preloved clothes before heading to the mall or place that online order waiting in your cart.
Honing in on your personal style; this can happen while you’re doing your closet clean out…take note on the fabrics, colours and fit you wear most. Your answers may be right in front of you.
Slow fashion and contributing to change starts with reclaiming control over our consumption habits, one conscious choice at a time.
Slowlyy Studio isn't just a brand; it's a movement and community. One that invites you to slow down, to savor the process, explore your creativity, and to dress with purpose. Join me on this journey towards a more mindful, sustainable future - one garment at a time.
I am always learning more each and every day, more ways to make the most impact on the fashion industry while continuing to create. There will be new additions to my services and site coming in the next few months, feel free to contact with any new ideas and projects. I cant wait to work with you.
